Why we are consulting
The Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) has received a request for a scientific opinion on Health Effects of Artificial Light.
In line with its procedures for stakeholder dialogue published in Annex IV of the rules of procedures on 18 December 2009, the European Commission's Health and Consumers Directorate-General is issuing a call for information on this subject.
Scope of the call for information:
Interested parties are invited to submit information on the following:
Specific information on the spectral power distribution (see e.g. http://physics.nist.gov/Divisions/Div844/manual/studymanual.html) of current technology light sources given both as spectral irradiance (in W/m2/nm from 180 nm through 1 mm wavelengths) and as spectral radiance (in W/m2/sr/nm from 300 through 1400 nm wavelengths) typically at a distance which produces an illumination of 500 lux. Note that if another distance is chosen e.g. for the characteristic use of a certain lamp type this needs to be explained / justified (See also IEC62471).
This data should be given for the light source as such, but also in its modification in different applications (direct illumination, reflection off ceiling or wall, using different transparent materials (e.g. glass/plastic) for the housing and different reflectors.)
Submission of information:
All information should be submitted in electronic form to: Sanco-call-information AT ec.europa.eu specifying "Artificial Light - Call for Information" in the subject line of the e-mail.
Please include your contact details, organization, and e-mail address in the text of the message. The full body of your contribution, as well as references should be attached as separate documents to the electronic message.
All information is considered public unless otherwise stated by the provider.
Guidelines for the submission of contributions, containing criteria for the call for information and guidance for submission can be found here and in the procedures for stakeholder dialogue (Annex IV)
Deadline for submission of information: 2 July 2010.
