Target audience
The European Commission invites scientists to join its Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety - SCCS.
Why we are consulting
The Scientific Committee established under Commission Decision (EU) 2024/1514 provides the Commission with scientific advice and safety assessment in the areas of consumer safety, and cosmetic ingredients in particular.
The Committee consists of a maximum of 19 members.
Successful candidates are expected to be well-established scientists with at least 10 years of professional experience and multi-disciplinary accomplishments.
Proven experience in risk assessment related to consumer safety is essential. Experience in safety assessment of cosmetic ingredients would be an asset.
Preference will be given to experts with (more than one) areas of expertise relevant to chemical safety, exposure, and hazard assessment: see details in the text of the call.
See also the leaflet.
Members are appointed to the Scientific Committee for a term of five years, starting on 1st January 2027.
More information on the work of the SCCS, current composition as well as their past opinions can be found here: Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) - Public Health.
Eligibility
Applicants must hold:
- a university degree in a relevant scientific area at postgraduate level;
- at least 10 years of professional experience;
- ability to work in English.
Selection procedure
Applicants must meet the admission, eligibility and independence criteria described under the Call.
In its selection process, the Commission will also consider candidates' representation from different geographic regions and gender balance. The European Commission is an equal-opportunity employer and is committed to avoiding any form of discrimination. Successful candidates will be informed of their selection by the autumn 2026.
Workload and Indemnities
Members are expected to regularly attend meetings to discuss, draft, and adopt opinions, statements, and guidance documents. They should actively engage in scientific discussions, document examinations, and draft opinions during meetings and for working groups. Attendance at workshops and hearings is required, with occasional roles as 'chairs' or 'rapporteurs'.
Candidates must be committed to contributing beyond meeting times, including participating actively in working groups. Familiarity with digital tools for managing and exchanging documents, as well as participating in online meetings, and be fluent in spoken and written English is essential.
Although members do not receive a salary, as they're not Commission employees, they are reimbursed for travel, accommodation, and subsistence expenses according to expert group standards. Additionally, members receive a flat fee of up to EUR 450 for each full day of a meeting attended, including preparatory work.
Respond to the consultation
Interested scientists are invited to apply online, filling in the online application form and to include a motivation letter, short curriculum vitae (maximum 3 pages), lists of publications and a declaration of any (potential conflicts of) interest.
The closing date for submitting applications is 31 May 2026. Only applications submitted via the online form will be considered.
