Call for the submission of safety data made available after 15 March 2005 on the use of hydrogen peroxide, in its free form or when released, in oral hygiene products
The European Commission has requested the Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP) a scientific advice on "the possible health risks associated with the use of hydrogen peroxide, in its free from or when released, in oral hygiene products".
The SCCP and its predecessor, the Scientific Committee on Cosmetics and Consumer Non Food Products (SCCNFP) have examined in the past the possible health risks that may be associated with the use of hydrogen peroxide in oral hygiene products. The past opinions of the SCCP and SCCNFP on hydrogen peroxide can be found here.
The current request to the SCCP is intended to be the final and comprehensive safety evaluation of hydrogen peroxide in oral hygiene products incorporating the information used in all previous occasions and all relevant publicly available scientific data that has become available since the last opinion (15 March 2005) of the SCCP on the safety of hydrogen peroxide in oral hygiene products.
- Scientific peer reviewed papers and reviews on the safety of hydrogen peroxide in its free form or when released, in oral hygiene products;
- Scientific data on the safety evaluation of hydrogen peroxide (risk assessments, results of hazard characterisation studies, results of exposure assessment studies, results of epidemiological studies, etc);
- Other publicly available credible scientific information that may not be easily available and which is directly relevant to this issue;
- Information on trends in the usage of hydrogen peroxide, in its free form or when released, in oral hygiene products;
All information is considered public unless otherwise stated by the provider.
