Objective of the consultation

The European Commission's 2011-2016 action plan against the rising threats of AMR was evaluated in 2016 concluding that the EU could bring added value in the fight against AMR, by: 1) supporting Member States and making the EU a best practice region on AMR; 2) boosting research, development and innovation against AMR; and 3) shaping the global agenda on AMR.

This open public consultation aimed to gather detailed views and opinions relating to the future 'Commission communication on a One Health action plan to support Member States in the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR)'. The results of this open public consultation were fed into the new One Health action plan and taken into account to propose concrete actions.

European One Health Action Plan against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)

On June 29, the European Commission adopted the new European One Health action plan against AMR, officially titled 'Communication from the Commission to the Council and the European Parliament: A European One Health Action Plan against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)'.

This new One Health action plan against AMR is motivated by the need for the EU to add value to Member States' actions and to play a leading role in the fight against AMR. Its overarching goal is to preserve the possibility of effective treatment of infections in humans and animals. It provides a framework for continued, more extensive action to reduce the emergence and spread of AMR and to increase the development and availability of new effective antimicrobials inside and outside the EU.
