Why we are consulting

Call for experts for the risk assessment of cosmetic ingredients
Code: 01 WG on cosmetic ingredients

The mission of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) is to provide the European Commission with scientific opinions concerning risk assessment of consumer products, manly cosmetic products and their ingredients, which the Commission uses to develop policies on the consumer protection.

To meet the anticipated increase in submission of safety dossiers based on alternative (non-animal) methods and read-across models due to the EU animal testing ban for cosmetics, the Directorate General for Health and Food Safety, in consultation with the SCCS, has launched a Call for expression of interest to appoint experts who will assist the work of the SCCS. They will be appointed in their personal capacity as external experts to appropriate working groups of the SCCS.

Experience in risk assessment related to consumer safety is essential. Preference will be given to experts who can cover 4 or more of the following areas of expertise for the assessment of chemical toxicity, with experience on interpretation of non-animal data in relation to human risk assessment and physiology:

  • regulatory toxicology,
  • alternative testing methods (e.g. in vitro tests),
  • alternative non-testing methods (e.g. QSAR models, read-across tools),
  • omics methods,
  • integrated testing approaches,
  • in vitro/in vivo extrapolation,
  • weight of evidence in risk assessment,

Please detail your expertise in the application form and CV.

Applicants should be aware that the workload would be substantial (4-5 hours a week); members of the working groups are expected to participate in monthly meetings in Luxembourg and by audio connection in addition to the work they contribute individually. Good knowledge of English is required as the working language will be English.

This Call for expression of interest is launched according to the Rules of Procedures of the Scientific Committees ensuring transparency and equal opportunities for highly qualified and specialised scientific experts.

Applications from interested candidates should be submitted online by 1 October 2018 indicating the area of expertise being applied for (click on the SCCS box at page 1/10 of the form). Only properly completed online applications will be considered.

IMPORTANT for filling in the application form:

  • Please include the name of the committee – SCCS - and the code of this specific call for experts: 01 SCCS WG on cosmetic ingredients.
  • Please add/type 'alternative and read-across methods in risk assessment' as the keyword under professional experience (p. 2/10) > categories > other expertise.

The closing date for the applications is 1 October 2018, 23:59, CET. However, the Database of Experts will remain open after this date and additional experts may be selected at a later stage if needed.

The successful candidates will be required to read and accept the conditions for external experts as explained in detail in the Rules of procedure of the Scientific Committees.
