European Expert Network for Rare communicable diseases and other rare pathologies in the context of Mobility and Globalization (EURaDMoG)

The purpose of this feasibility study is to explore the options for a European expert network on rare diseases, linked to mobility and globalization, focusing on Health Care provision, taking into account different operational and funding/sustainability criteria. The conclusion was that non-communicable and communicable rare diseases linked to mobility and globalization should be differentiated. Moreover, since all identified non-communicable rare diseases linked to mobility and globalization are already covered by different existing European Reference Networks (ERNs), there seems to be no need for create a new specific network for them or to include them in a new European network of rare diseases linked to mobility and globalisation. Therefore, the feasibility of a potential new European network was evaluated just for rare communicable diseases linked to Mobility and Globalisation, considering three scenarios: 1) “Status Quo” scenario: no new network. 2) to create a specific European expert network (EEN) on rare communicable diseases linked to mobility and globalisation. 3) to develop a new European Reference Network (ERN) on communicable diseases linked to mobility and globalisation as per other current ERNs. If the primary focus is health care provision, it could be concluded that a new ERN could have the potential to improve quality of care. However, a potential new network should not replace or duplicate current existing networks; they should solely be complementary in nature.
