Webinar: Health and medical students as HPV vaccination ambassadors

The European Commission is hosting a webinar to mark cervical cancer awareness month and to raise awareness of the benefits of HPV vaccination, in line with Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the United In Protection vaccination campaign. The main objective is to ensure that health and medical students have the information and tools they need to become HPV vaccination ambassadors.

Each year, there are around 33000 cases of cervical cancer in the European Union, and 15000 deaths. Yet, it is one of the most preventable forms of cancer. One of the goals of Europe's Beating Cancer Plan is to eliminate cervical cancer by vaccinating young people against the human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes it and which is also linked to head and neck, and anal cancers. Specifically, the Plan calls for vaccinating at least 90% of the EU's target population of girls and for significantly increasing the vaccination rate among boys. The Commission is also proposing a Council recommendation on vaccine-preventable cancers to help address cancer risks associated with HPV infection and other infections.
