Data on cross-border patient healthcare following Directive 2011/24/EU for reference year 2022

The cross-border health care directive (Directive 2011/24/EC) requires the Commission to periodically report on the operation of the Directive to the European Parliament and to the Council. The data used to analyse the operation of the Directive is collected yearly through the National Contact Points (NCPs) of EU and EEA countries. This report presents the data collected for the year 2022 based on the input of twenty-eight countries out of the thirty who received the questionnaire.

The report highlights:

• the increase of number of countries implementing a system of prior notification (10 in 2022 compared to 9 in 2021)
• 19 countries out of twenty-eight have a system for prior authorisation in place
• the 83.5% of the requests for cross border health care under the Directive was granted
• Patient mobility is mostly involving neighbouring countries
