Outbreaks and micro-organisms recognise no borders and can spread rapidly if action isn't taken in time. EU reactions must be rapid and coordinated in the event of an outbreak.

The Early Warning and Response System (EWRS)

EWRS is a confidential computer system allowing Member States to send alerts about events with a potential impact on the EU, share information, and coordinate their response. The system has already been successfully used for previous outbreaks of SARS, Pandemic Influenza A(H1N1) and other communicable diseases.

An EU decision and several implementing decisions regulate the sharing of information
