CancerWatch JA – Improving Quality and Timeliness of Cancer Registry Data feeding into the European Cancer Information System

Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan aims to better utilize data and digital technologies to understand and reduce the burden of cancer. The European Cancer Information System (ECIS) is a key initiative and part of the Knowledge Center on Cancer (KCC) flagship, relying on high-quality, population-based cancer registry (PBCR) data. CancerWatch JA addresses the variability in quality, completeness, and timeliness of PBCR data across Europe. It aims to improve registry operations, digitalization, and data quality, making insights available via ECIS and the European Health Data Space. The Joint Action will enhance data access, harmonize quality measures, and support cancer policy and research.

Results

Improved understanding of the burden of cancer in Europe through an impactful European Cancer Information System. This is established by addressing PBCR operations and digitalization, harmonized quality standards, enhanced data access and metadata catalogues, survival and prevalence indicators integrated into ECIS, and a sustainability roadmap for long-term impact.
