eCAN Plus – Enhancing digital capabilities of cancer centres in Europe to improve prevention and care

Digital transformation can bring significant benefits to the healthcare sector, but barriers persist in the European Union around interoperability, legal and ethical standards, governance, cybersecurity, technical requirements, and compliance with personal data protection rules.

eCAN Plus supports Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan’s objective to ensure high standards in cancer care. It aims to bring the benefits of digital health to all European citizens, patients and healthcare professionals and improve cancer prevention and care by strengthening the digital capabilities of cancer centres in Europe, with particular attention paid to opportunities in Eastern Europe. More concretely, its objectives are to:

  • Implement a comprehensive training programme for digital skills development
  • Enhance digital collaboration among cancer centres
  • Explore clinical applications of telemedicine in different cancer care settings
  • Bolster preparedness for the European Health Data Space’s implementation

To achieve these objectives, the following activities will be carried out:

  • Running pilots and use cases of digital educational interventions, health data exchanges, and telemedicine applications in the cancer field to identify best practices
  • Upgrading the eCAN mobile application used for telemonitoring
  • Updating a publicly available dashboard of indicators related to eHealth policies across European countries
  • Developing a blueprint charting a path for integrating cancer digital tools into European healthcare systems

Creating a comprehensive guide for reimbursement of cancer digital tools by European countries
