Call for experts

The European Commission has requested the Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER), for a scientific opinion on the potential risks to human health of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs).

The mandate can be found here.

To enable a comprehensive assessment of the potential risks of LEDs to human health, the SCHEER has identified a need for experts to be part in the relevant working group that will work on this opinion.

Expertise is required in one or more of the following areas related to the topic of this specific mandate (the potential risks to human health of Light Emitting Diodes):

  • ophthalmology (medical research)
  • dermatology (medical research)
  • psychology (related to light disorders)
  • neurology (sleep research/disorders) and
  • cardiology

In addition, experience in risk assessment, is essential. Applicants should be aware that the workload would be substantial (4-5- hours a week) for 9-12 months; members of the working groups are expected to participate in meetings in Luxembourg and by audio in addition to the work they contribute individually. Good knowledge of English is required as the working language will be English.

This call for experts is launched according to the Rules of procedure of the Scientific Committees ensuring transparency and equal opportunities for highly qualified and specialised scientific experts.

Applications from interested candidates should be submitted online. Only properly completed online applications will be considered.

The closing date for the applications is 5 September 2016. However, the call for experts will remain open after this date and additional experts may be selected at a later stage if needed.

The successful candidates will be required to read and accept the conditions for external experts as explained in detail in the Rules of procedure of the Scientific Committees.
