2021 EU Health Award

The submission period for the 2021 EU Health Award has now closed. The deadline for submissions was 30 November 2021.

Within the general context of the EU Health Policy Platform, the European Commission launches the 2021 EU Health Award on the following two topics:

  • Cancer prevention: rewarding the initiatives of cities, NGOs (or other civil society organisations), and educational institutions seeking to promote communication and health literacy on cancer prevention among children and young people (from 6 to 24 years old).
  • Mental health: rewarding community-based initiatives alleviating the mental health impact of COVID-19.

As well as celebrating their achievements and commitment, the EU Health Award raises awareness of the vital role cities, local authorities, civil society and educational institutions play in strengthening participative democracy and active citizenship in public health.

The theme of the Award changes every year.

  • In 2015, the Award recognised initiatives that helped combat the Ebola outbreak and prevent the spread of the disease.
  • In 2016, it went to initiatives that helped protect human health against Antimicrobial Resistance.
  • In 2017, the Health Award rewarded initiatives that contribute to a higher level of public health in the European Union through Vaccination.
  • In 2018, the European Commission dedicated the EU Health Award to initiatives of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that contribute to a higher level of public health in the European Union by working to prevent tobacco use among young Europeans.
  • In 2019, the Award was dedicated for the first time to initiatives of cities, NGOs and schools seeking to prevent and reduce obesity in children and young people (6-18 years).
  • In 2020, the sixth edition of the EU Health Award was about two major health subjects, healthy lifestyles and vaccination, targeting NGOs, cities, schools and kindergartens.

Through this year Award, the EU Health Policy Platform is also gathering good practices from cities and local authorities, NGOs and other not-for-profit organisations as well as from educational institutions, enabling others to be inspired by them or to duplicate them in their own settings.

This Award is funded through the EU4Health Programme 2021-2027 and helps to achieve the Programme’s aims by supporting the identification, dissemination and implementation of good practices that improve health and the quality of life.
