Call for experts on ad hoc rapid risk assessment of chemical threats

The Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER) is mandated by the European Commission to provide within a short time-frame (36 hours) public health risk assessment in case of cross-border chemical threats in the European Union, as laid down in Article 10 of Decision 1082/2013/EU .

The Directorate General for Health and Food Safety is launching a call for experts to create a pool of experts who will assist the Committee in this task.

From this pool of experts individual experts will be called only in case of need as ad hoc external experts for the SCHEER Working Group on Rapid Risk Assessment.

The pool will be valid until April 2021.

Candidates are required to have experience in dealing with acute chemical incidents and providing follow up response to chemical exposures/ incidents and be able to provide advice in relation to chronic health problems related to these chemical exposures/ incidents.

Specialist knowledge in one or more of the following areas is also required: public health risk assessment, general toxicology, clinical and medical toxicology, exposure assessment, environmental sciences and chemical agent specific knowledge.

Experience in relevant EU projects addressing public health risk assessment of chemical threats (e.g. Echemnet, ASHT), is an asset.

Good knowledge of English is required as the working language will be English.

Applicants should be aware that participating in the work of the Rapid Risk Assessment Working Group requires an intense commitment of 1-3 days in case of an event requiring a rapid risk assessment.

The applicants should be willing to work with electronic tools for the management and exchange of documents and also interactive meetings (audio-meetings).

The Scientific Committees' experts do not receive a salary as they are not employed by the Commission, but they are paid a flat allowance of a maximum of EUR 450 for each full day (or 225 EUR for half day) of an audio meeting that they attend, including related preparatory work.
