Description

The EU’s 8th Environment Action Programme reiterates the need to identify climate and environmental risks and take action to prevent, mitigate and adapt to them. Consequently, the EU has established a foresight system for the systematic identification of emerging environmental issues (FORENV) to enable policy makers and other stakeholders to prevent or effectively manage emerging risks, and to ensure that opportunities are identified and exploited.

The European Environmental Agency (EEA) Scientific Committee and the Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER) have been asked to evaluate issues selected by FORENV in several cycles. These Committees provided their opinion on risks and opportunities for human and environmental health. You can read their full reports here: Research and innovation - European Commission

The last report on emerging environmental and other issues impacting the ability to achieve a water-resilient Europe by 2050 can be found here. The SCHEER input can be found in Appendix B.
